Patron Saint of Pride walks alongside you when your heart constricts and your throat tightens, unsure if Who You Are will make you unsafe on your way home from school.

Patron Saint of Pride wraps their arms around you when you cry frustrated tears. Your friends didn't have to sit their parent's down to announce they're hetero. Why is it different when you're not?

Patron Saint of Pride knows that society is unfair, but if you are brave and own your identity, maybe Hiro down the road will be brave as well. And maybe his cousin Laqeesha will be brave. Maybe society will grow so that we don’t have to be brave about our identities anymore. We can just be.

You struggle with the concept that having categories creates belonging, identity and home because sometimes the categories are wrong. Sometimes you can’t fit into the categories displayed. Patron Saint of Pride nestles in your chest and whispers “Do you want to know a secret? You are your own category. We’re all different, but none of us are alone. You belong, you are whole, you are more than your sexuality or pronouns, but once you own those pieces of you? Wow. You will be more powerful than the sun itself.” They tilt your head up high, smooth your shoulders down, look you in the eyes and say “I’m so proud of you”.
