Yabukanzou is a perennial herb native to China that came to Japan from China in ancient times that blooms in summer.
It was called wasuregusa in Manyoshu (the oldest anthology of Japanese poetry), and people believed that having this flower would help them forget painful things.
It produces bright reddish-orange flowers with double-layered blossoms at the end of a bifurcated flower stalk in summer.
It is a one-day flower, opening in the morning and wilting in the evening. Since it does not bear fruit, it multiplies mainly by underground stems.
The whole plant is edible, and the buds and young shoots are especially tender and sweet.
