In this visual expression, a periwinkle blue for the night sky was chosen. Coincidentally, the flower of the biblical myrtle bush was also this shade of blue. The sky is separated by a protective curve that represents shelter. In the Hashkivenu prayer, there is another phrase referencing G-d protecting us 'under the shadow of His wings.' A band of shadow and a feather reinforce the curve. Within the shelter are the four species as well as three pomegranates, a common symbol in Judaism. The pomegranates are used to not only reference the New Year but also, to acknowledge that Sukkot is one of three pilgrimage festivals that were commanded in the Torah. The complete circle that emerges from the species, alludes to the sense of peace we are hoping for when this compelling prayer is said. The background colors were chosen to be peaceful. The additional curves are meant to bring the eye into the design in an inviting way, alluding to the Ushpizin ceremony of symbolically inviting our forefathers/mothers to join us in the sukkah.

Sacred Intention collection image

Sacred Intention is a collection of 28 paintings, 1/1 edition. Delving into the meanings of various prayers, blessings and psalms, has led the artist to the creation of this series, “Sacred Intention.” "The process of painting has always been my emphasis as a professional artist. That process, when focused and meditative, is a perfect fit for an authentic expression of prayer." Marlene Burns, 2022 Each of the 28 paintings is accompanied by a text that expounds upon the sacred intention in prayer and the painting process.
