They display cultural behaviours, with different populations tackling the same problem in different ways. They learn from other orangutans and pass on their own skills when they meet, which is more frequent when food availability is high.
The Malay word orangutan means “person of the forest.” These long-haired, orangish primates, found only in Sumatra and Borneo. They are highly intelligent with an ability to reason and think. Orangutans are one of our closest relatives, sharing 97% of our DNA. They are unique in the ape world. Of the four kinds of nonhuman great apes gorillas, orangutans, bonobos, and chimpanzees – only the orangutan comes from Asia; the rest come from Africa.
They are critically endangered species of great ape. Their habitat consists of the lowland rainforests and tropical, swamp, and mountain forests on the island of Borneo. Sad part is, their populations have declined by more than 50% over the past 60 years, and the species' habitat has been reduced by at least 55% over the past 20 years.
