Secret Artist #21 — Aura and the Vibe Thieves
Aura was backstage and she was looking at her fellow artists with disgust.
In one corner, there was a holier-than-thou pop queen who always talked about “purity”, sitting with her leg over a male model and a hand reaching for a bag of blue powder. In the other corner, was everyone’s favourite bad boy punk rocker sitting with his legs in a basket reading a book about a smoothie diet, and in his hand, a bottle of processed vegetable juice.
Fakers! All of them!
And their music was just as bad! Pointless, generic, cynical rip-offs of better artists that had come before them.
Vibe Thieves were different and their fans knew it. It wasn’t long until they were due on stage, but Aura was channelling her disgust into a last-minute idea. It went against all the rules and “artist codes”, but fuck it. She blinked hard twice.

“Aura and the Vibe Thieves! You’re on!”
Aura had got what she needed. She blinked hard again and turned to her bandmates.
“Come on guys! Let’s do this!”
Aura and the Vibe Thieves all huddled around each other and counted to three. One, two, three, an electrical surge enveloped them and the air sizzled.
“Vibe Thieves!”
As Aura’s band members walked on stage, she walked over to the AV guy.
“I’m going to transmit something and I want you to play it. That cool?”
“Whatever you say, Aura!”
Aura climbed the steps and listened to the crowd roar! She grabbed the mic and echoed their chant back to them.
“HERE WE, HERE WE, HERE WE FUCKING GOOO!” The crowd was screaming even louder now.
“I’M AURA AND WE ARE….” She paused and listened to the cheers. “...AND WE ARE…WELL…HERE’S WHO WE’RE NOT!”.
Aura closed her eyes and behind her, the Vibe Thieves logo on the screen disappeared. A video started. A video of the festival backstage. A video of a not-so-innocent popstar doing things she said she never did, while a punk rocker knocked back beetroot juice as two hairdressing droids attempted to make his hair look perfectly dishevelled.
The crowd began to laugh and jeer.
“...WE ARE NOT… FUCKING FRAUDS LIKE THESE GUYS!”
The pop queen and the punk rocker suddenly appeared stage left and stage right, being held back by security, fighting to get at her. She gave them both a wave.
“WE ARE…” She looked back at her band members and they all returned her wicked smile.
“...THE VIBE THIEVES!“
“ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR!”
