Mephisto Waltz is from the early set of Torqued Paintings, and was completed in 2002. This piece is a pair of two, Mephisto Waltz I and II, using a unique shape that I was experimenting with at the time but which I didn't use again. These pieces were named after the 'Mephisto Waltzes' piano pieces by Franz Liszt. The Torqued Painting series began in 1998 and has continued to develop over time. The series gets its name from the 'torqued' nature of the surface which curves because of the way the frame has been constructed with alternating depths. When canvas is stretched overtop it results in a torqued surface.
