About the piece: Reel v/s real- the struggle all of us go through to maintain the balance of our lives and coordination between the phases takes up a very monumental space of our day. The constant shift between personalities demands attention and effort to maintain harmony.

Home is where the heart belongs- A place where we let loose of ourselves and the parts we play throughout the day for different reasons. Our own cheeky self peeps out of the corner to share an untimely joke. The comfort of our abode's ambience soothes our eyes to shut in the ever-looming lap of sleepiness. Our feet can travel unknown roads, our hands might caress untouched walls but our heart finds peace in the dusty corner of our rooms at the end of the day.

This image, captured in Kushmandi district of North Dinajpur in West Bengal, shows a moment of a child from the local tribe of Gomira folk dancers their traditional mask for the offering prayers to their local power deities and in respect for their roots in cultural heritage. As the young boy struggles to hold a Gomira mask on his face, we get an insight into his little world. A small house with beautiful masks hanging on walls and a sleek thread that connects to his world- the thread that signifies culture that has been an uniting force across generations that has managed to keep the art and culture alive.

"7 billion people, 14 billion faces" - is a common saying portraying the thought that every person wears a mask and there's a side of them that stays hidden to the world. While having many "faces" is frowned upon, I believe that we often wear masks as an act of sheathing ourselves from and in various situations.

With this collection, I would thus like to break the taboo that having multiple personalities can be “deceptive” to many; it is in-fact, a common adaptive behaviour amongst humans to stay relevant, fit in and to feel accepted in the society.

Through the rich, varied cultures and folk festivals of my motherland, Bengal, India, I present 12 evocative 1/1 photographs aimed at normalising us wearing “masks” to cope with the societal pressures.

These images showcase the rich cultural inheritance of Bengal and celebrate the “significant humans” hiding behind those masks.

Shot in the remote districts over the last 4-5 years, this is my most personal and emotional body of work!
