About the Photograph: Rann of Kutch is the largest white desert in the world. The whiteness of the desert is due to the salt deposits and strangely there is no sand in this desert. This is a unique topology. The area was a once a sprawling shallow of the Arabian Sea until a constant geological shift closed off the connection with the sea. Over the years, the region eventually became a seasonal marshy salt desert. The water dried up and the salt from the ocean created a crunchy based bed of white salt.

Rann of Kutch is home to many nomadic tribes who are known for their colorful dresses all stitched by hand. The earliest settlements are found to be from 3500 BCE as a part of the Indus Valley Civilization. The nomadic tribes of Kutch lead a very simple life. Their major occupations being cattle rearing for milk & wool.

The women folks who cannot do jobs of cattle rearing remain inside homes and do handicraft artworks like beaded accessories, embroidered textiles and much more. These artifacts contain elements which purely symbolize their rich culture, customs and simplistic lifestyles. The most interesting tribes are the Rabris. Rabari women wear red, black and colourful dresses and a backless blouse embroidered with mirror work and intricate thread work.

This Special edition is to celebrate the Women and Colours of these nomadic tribes of Rann of Kutch who create beautiful handicrafts and artworks which makes this white desert more colourful. Rann of Kutch looks especially beautiful during sunset with orangish blue sky and the horizon.
