This painting is like a "Note to Self." In the context on my painting, "It Gets Better" is a quote from my Harvard professor, David McIntosh, who was teaching a class about life, happiness, and making important life-altering decisions. On one particular day, Professor McIntosh was discussing teen suicide and the darkest moments of people's lives. His voiced cracked with empathy and emotion in a way that I will never, ever forget. Using real statistics about times in life of profound sadness and loss, he implored people going through depression, almost pleading for them to be aware of and remember that "It Gets Better." This is a painted reminder (forever on the blockchain) that when times are tough that things DO get better - it's scientifically proven! :)
My greatest goal as an artist is to de-stigmatize mental illness and raise awareness around mental health. As someone who has struggled with depression, and lost close friends to suicide, my art has always been inspired by expressing how I feel when I can’t communicate it through my words.
Drawn Together is a collaborative drawing project between myself and 50+ leading artists from the NFT space. I truly believe that NFTs can be used to create positive impact, and this new market and technology is enabling all of us to elevate the conversation about mental health through our artwork.
I am delighted to also be partnering with Charitas, who agreed to match funds that we raise with this NFT. The proceeds from the sale of the final NFT, and from the individual sales of each artists contribution separately, will be going towards NAMI, an organization that works to educate, advocate, and improve the lives of people with mental illness and their loved ones.
