When Paul McCartney visited Willem de Kooning’s studio, the painter told him something surprising: that his paintings were first and foremost about, “the aesthetics. The look of it. The art of it. The colour and the brushstrokes”. McCartney was stunned, but liberated.
There is always meaning behind my paintings, but taking priority, and without which no painting would exist, is how they look, what they do to the eye, what the colours invoke. Rhythm, patterns, shapes, colour, all coded within and hopefully dancing from the wrist. The meaning an artist ascribes to their work soon morphs into something else for a viewer; meaning is transient whereas the artist’s colour coding, less so. And if the end result of this colour coding invokes something within you, and creates meaning, then that’s what it’s all about.
