On 19 April 1943, a chemist called Albert Hofmann re-synthesized a compound he'd previously discovered, accidentally ingested himself with it and was quickly overwhelmed by a new type of sensory overload. What he’d discovered and ingested was LSD. Within two decades, the compound had exploded across the collective consciousness and would help revolutionise the Western world’s metaphysical understanding of the world we inhabit.

That April day, Hofmann cycled home whilst under the immense influence of this compound, and so every year, 19 April is celebrated as ‘Bicycle Day’. This painting is less a celebration of the substance than of the discovery of something that can readily show us that the world we see — as Amazonian shamans and Buddhists knew already — is but a fraction of what’s there.

This painting has been recreated to allow for large printing and the buyer will receive the draft version as an unlockable.
