The collection entitled Seasonal by Italian and Canadian artist Jenna Basso Pietrobon is inspired by the Italian Futurist 1930’s event that occurred at the Penna D’Oca in Milan, Italy. In the exact same space where these artists gathered to speak about the food of the future, so does Basso Pietrobon, almost 100 years later. This exhibition contains ceramic vegetable lamps, handmade plates, a collection of photographs and NFTs that draw on art historical precedents for using fruits and vegetables as memento mori, a food experience from 1930, an ASMR video, sound installation, the ‘Dimmi Amore’ manifesto, and a participatory element of postcards.

"I left New York a few years ago and moved to my grandparents hometown of Bassano del Grappa and Nove — which is located in Veneto, Italy. I made this decision because my work as an artist was changing, and I needed to adapt my life so that the work could continue to flow. I wanted to learn from the artisans, to be close to the source of natural materials, to meet with different factories whose focus is on quality rather than quantity so that I can up-cycle their discarded material — and most of all, I wanted to connect to my roots in order to understand who I am.

Seasonal has become a two-year-long project. From 2021 - 2022 I have taken photographs of Italian seasonal fruits and vegetables. And from 2022 - 2023 the photographs and NFTs will be released when these fruits and vegetables are in season. For example, June is the season of Cherries, and thus - the Cherries NFT and limited edition photographs are released. Every few weeks another fruit or vegetable will be released.

Having lived in Canada and the United States for most of my life, residing in the Italian countryside has exposed me to new and simple pleasures. Stepping away from urban centers—where markets are perennially flush with greenhouse produce or international imports—I remember the terrestrial cycles that govern animals and plants that were familiar to my ancestors who farmed the Italian countryside.

Seasonal is a collection of photographs and NFT gifs that collide my local Italian produce with art historical precedents for using fruits and vegetables as memento mori. By releasing one set of photographs and NFTs every two weeks, I play on the idea of being “in season,” inserting a geological temporality into a realm that is otherwise seemingly untethered to the material or the worldly.
