Winter doesn’t always mean snow in the Lofoten Islands. Being located along the Gulfstream means that the temperatures don’t get as low as one would expect for such a latitude. Typically, the temperatures are just around freezing. That means we either have rain or snow. I much prefer the latter. The morning I took this image was one of those pinch-my-arm moments. We’d gotten a fair bit of snow and everything was covered in white. A true winter wonderland.
Imagine a place where the sun doesn't rise in winter and doesn't set in summer. A place where the night sky is dominated by explosions of green, red, and purple. A place where jagged mountains and angry oceans meet. A place where the weather is unforgiving. A place of beauty, peace, and solitude.
That place is the Lofoten Islands. An archipelago north of the Arctic Circle that could've been taken out of a fairytale.
My name is Christian Hoiberg and I'm a full-time photographer from Norway who's been living north of the Arctic circle for the past years. My main work is leading photography tours in Arctic regions and teaching photography online. I've written several ebooks and hundreds of articles to help aspiring photographers develop their skills.
Cold and stormy weather is what I'm passionate about photographing. It makes me feel alive.
