A dream location and one that I originally planned to shoot 2 years prior to creating this image. Unfortunately, it took that length of time to get favourable conditions during the right time of year, and for me to find space in a hectic schedule. The first night I arrived, it was cloudy. So was the second. But the last night of my stay was perfect. Sometimes you have to be patient to realise a dream.

This image is a 16 shot panorama, stitched together to capture the full arch of a setting Milky Way core in the Southern Hemisphere. The total number of shots is actually more than 16, as each one of these ‘positions’ is 4 separate images that are stacked together – a technique used to reduce noise as shooting at night requires very high ISO’s. Therefore, the sum total to create this image was actually 64 shots. Each one had the following settings - ISO 3200, f2.2, for 15 seconds – 2 years in the planning and 16 minutes to shoot… Resolution is 85.67 megapixels (11336 x 7557).

Our Milky Way collection image

Award winning Photographer, David Atkins (The Nocturnal Photographer), presents 12 minted images from the collection ‘Under the Milky Way’. Each image has a supply of 1 and is the only copy. Each image has been carefully selected for this collection and features beautiful and unique foreground compositions under the magnificent Milky Way core. Shot on location in various parts of Western Australia, David’s meticulous planning and creative inspiration combine to produce distinctive results of thought-provoking photography. Every image has resulted from new ideas of how to show off not only the incredible wonder of the milky way but also the magnificent landscapes we have on our planet. The challenges, the adventure and the feeling of peace and gratitude I feel when sitting under a sky of stars is, for me, unrivalled. Surprisingly few people have ever seen the Milky Way and so my main goal is to share and show off the diversity and wonder of what this world (and universe) has to offer.
