“Halfway through my journey of running away from my life, I ended up in a place much quieter than my insecure mind. A place I knew right away would become where I dreamt about for the rest of my life. J Tree. My safe haven. Stillness. Allowing me to sit with my thoughts and watch the sun rise and fall like there is nothing else that matters in the world. I remember climbing up the rocks with my camera, a blanket and my journal. There was something so foreign to me about absolute stillness. Sitting so high above ground, feeling so safe. Something was shifting... This is where I began to learn to accept myself. My own opinion suddenly mattered more than the abusive voices of my past that were starting to fade away.”
This image is part of Saige Carlson’s collection titled “A New Light”, a series of edition 1/1 photographs taken on a 1970’s Nikon film camera during a life-saving road trip after leaving behind a toxic relationship and trying to reclaim ones sense of self.
The goal with this collection is to inspire others to step outside your comfort zone and find your New Light. If you feel out of control and hopeless in life, please reach out to somebody. You matter. So much.
On April 27, 2018, I ran away from my life. Just a couple weeks after going through a painful breakup with someone that came two years too late, I took off on a journey down the coast - BC to Southern California - equipped with only my thoughts of self-hatred and the old 1970’s Nikon film camera that my ex never took when he left… I was off.
Each of the twelve 35mm photos in this 1/1 NFT collection brought me back to life. They showed me A New Light within myself. They have been retouched to bring out the light and colour within them. Each image has a rich story, detailed in its description.
The overwhelming sense of independence I experienced while creating these images was one hundred times more empowering than any partner had ever made me feel.
My goal with this collection is to inspire others to step outside your comfort zone and find your New Light. If you feel out of control and hopeless in life, please reach out to somebody. You matter. So much.
Thank you for being here.
