“There was no coming back now. I knew once I went through this tunnel, everything would change. This was a place I never imaged I could make it to without a certain somebody. And now I was here. Without him. Chasing my independence. I was catching up to it. I had made it so far so quickly and the more I allowed my life to change, the more my painful past was fading away. No more echos of gaslit screams and belittlement. Finding a sense of purpose and looking in the mirror and actually beginning to recognize myself was much scarier than I ever imagined… but that scary feeling is also an empowering, sacred experience. I began to imagine, what if what they say is true? What if the only thing worth fearing is fear itself?”
This image is part of Saige Carlson’s collection titled “A New Light”, a series of edition 1/1 photographs taken on a 1970’s Nikon film camera during a life-saving road trip after leaving behind a toxic relationship and trying to reclaim ones sense of self.
The goal with this collection is to inspire others to step outside your comfort zone and find your New Light. If you feel out of control and hopeless in life, please reach out to somebody. You matter. So much.
On April 27, 2018, I ran away from my life. Just a couple weeks after going through a painful breakup with someone that came two years too late, I took off on a journey down the coast - BC to Southern California - equipped with only my thoughts of self-hatred and the old 1970’s Nikon film camera that my ex never took when he left… I was off.
Each of the twelve 35mm photos in this 1/1 NFT collection brought me back to life. They showed me A New Light within myself. They have been retouched to bring out the light and colour within them. Each image has a rich story, detailed in its description.
The overwhelming sense of independence I experienced while creating these images was one hundred times more empowering than any partner had ever made me feel.
My goal with this collection is to inspire others to step outside your comfort zone and find your New Light. If you feel out of control and hopeless in life, please reach out to somebody. You matter. So much.
Thank you for being here.
