It was the last day of lockdown and we wanted to fly the drone from home one last time before being free. Chelsea had the drone remote and ended up capturing this stunning road that leads into the dramatic ridges of Mauritius. After Chelsea snapped this shot, Brayden took over. Brayden flew the drone out over the ocean and then quickly realized he didn’t have enough battery to fly back home. Panic set in. We needed the drone to finish the video project for our client and couldn’t afford to lose it. Brayden thought we could drive as far as we could to the end of the peninsula and meet up with the drone so it didn’t crash land on shore. We hopped in the car as quickly as we could with Chelsea in shotgun piloting the drone. On the drive over we went behind a hill causing the drone to disconnect from the remote. The drone was using its return to home feature, but when it disconnected we could see that it was on the map above a small sliver of land with water on all sides. The probability of getting the drone back was not in our favor. Hoping we would be lucky, with little optimism, we drove to where we thought the drone might have ended up and was met by the huge gates of a 5-star resort. There was a security guard at the gates and we started to tell him about how the drone may have crashed on the hotel property. Luckily this man was incredibly nice and radioed his team. He informed us that one of his team members actually thought they noticed a banging sound on the roof of the resort. After some time anxiously waiting, two hotel staff came to the rescue with the drone in hand. Miraculously, the drone was perfectly intact. Go figure, the roof was flat and made of thatched palm leaves so the drone had a clean landing (crash landing) and didn’t even have a scratch on it. We returned home with our trusty “eye in the sky” that had served us so well through lockdown to live another day.

1000 Miles Out collection image

A Collection by Chelsea Mealo and Brayden Hall

1000 Miles Out is a collection of 37 1/1 images based on the shared experience of getting stuck abroad on the tiny island of Mauritius for 6 months by these two artists. A job had brought them to Mauritius early March 2020. Despite expressing concern about traveling in light of developing travel restrictions, the client urged them to go. It took three days to travel around the world from New York to the middle of the Indian Ocean. The day after arriving, they were informed that the island would be closing its airport, the only way on and off the island, for 10 days. Periodically, this 10 days turned to a month, two months and so on resulting in an unexpected six-month stay. Initially, the island was incredibly strict with a police-enforced lockdown. Trapped abroad tested the two both financially and mentally. However, the life-changing experience had a bittersweet ending as the two developed deep friendships and love for the island.
