This music was originally composed for an animation "Jellyfish Town" produced by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's COVID-19 Countermeasures Project. Click here to watch the animation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOpT1ddZ5xE

This animation is a multi-layered work. On the surface, rain = corona virus, jellyfish = houses and masks (that protect us from the rain). The metaphor is that girl = people who are out (who have to go out) or think that the economy > COVID-19.

The medical and distribution people are working hard to keep up with COVID-19, but the apple = love (this metaphor comes from Freud) is not received well. The boy shows understanding for such outcasts and those who are working, but all material support is refused. Instead, it is the cane = support = contribution to others that is received by the girl and she receives an apple instead.

The boy receives the apple = love and the rain = COVID-19 is up. The picture that flew out of his breast pocket transforms into all kinds of animals and disappears into a large jellyfish that covers the earth.

Love will change form and will be transmitted to other animals. Because the earth is a big jellyfish = home.

This work is about love.

But that is a superficial message. The truth is a modern version of "Also sprach Zarathustra".

I believe that the spread of the COVID-19 has made people fear failure. If you go out there, you might die, if you stop the economy, you might die. That's why everyone wants to know the "right" answer. They want others to decide how not to "fail".

I saw this as a harbinger of the collapse of democracy.

Democracy cannot exist without the ability of each citizen to think. This is because the people rule the country.

But how will people govern themselves when they have lost the ability to think?

I think it will be a "Rule of Philosopher King" in which only a few smart people will govern, and the rest of the people without the ability to think will follow their politics.

"Rule of Philosopher King" was an alternative to the democratic politics that Plato tried in the past, in which only the truly wise, who had studied philosophy, were given power and their private thoughts did not intervene.

But the "Rule of Philosopher King" failed because there was no way to select people who should stand above the people.

However what about today? I think it is already being controlled by a few smart people. I believe that the GAFA (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon) has already taken over.

They buy the best reviewed products on Amazon, use iPhones for their smartphones, and ask Google if they don't understand something. If you are not a thinker, your thinking can be controlled by GAFA.

Now, Nietzsche wrote a similar story in "Also sprach Zarathustra".

At that time, Christian believers believed in reincarnation, and there was a tendency to believe that even if things did not go well in this life, they could do their best in the next life. Nietzsche criticized this idea outright and gave birth to the term "Ewig Wiederkehren". In other words, we must live in such a way that we can affirm today, even if this day is to be repeated forever.

Nietzsche criticized people who have this idea of self-transcendence as "superman" and the modern general public, who are frightened of conflicts in human relationships and seek happiness in the form of security, peace, comfort, and ease in life, as "last man".

Returning to the animation, the truth is that rain is anxiety about the future itself. Jellyfish = something that tells us the right answer (GAFA) = something fluffy that nestles above our heads. In other words, the person who lives under the jellyfish is the "last man".

The reason for the name "jellyfish," by the way, comes from the story "Jellyfish" in Kaoru Kitamura's "Sleeping in Water," a collection of short stories. The story "Jellyfish" is about a jellyfish-shaped "personal air conditioner" that was put on the market and people began to live their lives while wearing jellyfish helmets. At the beginning of the story, both the boy and the people of the city are under the jellyfish, indulging in convenience and unwittingly promoting GAFA politics. The lack of a face is meant to criticize the last man as something non-human (domesticated humanity).

The girl = Zarathustra = superman does not use jellyfish and desperately tries to convince people, but the "last man" does not understand.

Only the boy (= a possible disciple of Zarathustra) listens to the girl, but the girl does not accept what comes out of the jellyfish = stability and peace. The handing over of the staff is from the passage "Zarathustra receives a golden staff with a golden handle from his disciple and preaches morality".

The boy who removes his glasses=GoogleGlasses, becomes a thinker and bites the apple=Apple, Inc. Here the apple is a double-meaning with the biblical "fruit of wisdom," and the boy who gains wisdom is on his way to becoming "superman".

When he attains wisdom, the rain = anxiety has already stopped. There was no such thing from the beginning. Yet, people still live under jellyfish.

The pattern of the picture of the camel flying away from the breast pocket is changing from camel to lion to juvenile. This is based on Nietzsche's analogy of the mental transformation required to become a superman, as described by Nietzsche in "Also sprach Zarathustra".

The boy aspires to become a superhuman, but even so, the earth has already been taken over by a big jellyfish (GAFA). Because human beings have evolved in pursuit of "ease" and no one can stop this trend.

Musically, too, the piece is very well designed.

First of all, the solo cello plays "Gregorian Chant" at the beginning of the piece. This is a quotation from R. Strauss's "Also sprach Zarathustra".

Also, it contrasts three and four time signatures. Before the Baroque, there was only three-beat music, because three was the perfect number for Christianity. (The Trinity). In other words, four beats were imperfect and human beats.

The first half of this piece is in four beats, representing the last man. However, in the scene where the girl in the white hood appears, it is in three beats. Naturally, this is a metaphor for the girl = Zarathustra.

After the boy eats the apple, it becomes six beats. It is a mixture of three and four beats. The boy is on the way to becoming a superman, but he is still incomplete and has yet to become a three-beat.

The ending was somewhat pessimistic when this piece was produced, but not now. This is because the NFT has arrived on the scene. I believe that NFT is a technology that can break through GAFA politics and make us truly proactive. That is why I thought it worthwhile to make this work NFT. I feel not only beauty but also dignity and toughness in "Girls & Flowers" by onabe. I think "Girls & Flowers" gives the music hope and a firm will for the future.

##■Illustration Commentary by onabe

The illustration has a multi-layered structure, in keeping with the animation.

The theme of the first layer is a collaboration between "Girls & Flowers" and Tenkyu as a "jacket" to color the music. The overall color scheme is slightly darker to match the ennui of the song. The colors and the image of the girls respect the anime, and I arranged them to make the work unique to Girls & Flowers. Since this is our first collaborative work, the design has a "special" feel that has not been seen in my previous works, while at the same time taking advantage of the simplicity of Girls & Flowers.

While tulips have the meaning of "compassion" in the language of flowers, yellow tulips actually have the meaning of "hopeless love". When I first heard this song, the feelings that welled up in my heart were something like sadness, deep love, and "nostalgia. By daring to have yellow tulips, which have a sad flower language, it evokes a sad love story.

The theme of the second layer is the future of my imagined "Jellyfish Town" (public interpretation of the story). The flowers in full bloom in the background of the girl are actually apple blossoms. I painted the apple blossoms with the hope that the boy who received the apple (love) from the girl in "Jellyfish Town" will carefully nurture the apple seed, and that he will in turn give the apple (love) to others. There are a few droplets of water left on the apple blossoms, representing the fact that it is after the rain. The girl who was wearing a hood in the animation is not wearing one in this illustration. The flowers are dignified and blooming toward the sun, and I hope the deep blue of the background looks like a wide blue sky.

The theme of the third layer is a message to "the last person" and hopes for the possibilities of NFT. The apple blossom, which was expressed in the second layer in a sunny way, has the word "preference" in the language of flowers. This is a message to those who seek answers and do not think for themselves or make choices on their own, as Tenkyu warned in "Also sprach Zarathustra". In addition, the words "Ewig Wiederkehren" which Nietzsche advocated, are hidden in the illustration so that a quick look at the illustration will not reveal them. If you look closely, you will see that only four of the yellow circles in the flowers are kanji characters. This is a tribute to the technique of hiding the word "Nihon" in the cherry blossoms printed on Japanese bills to prevent forgery, and by making Tenkyu's music NFT, it is actually intended to be an unmistakable proof that this music is "real" and cannot be imitated or disguised by anyone.

この曲はもともと「アートにエールを！」という東京都のコロナ対策プロジェクトで制作したアニメ作品用の音楽になります。 アニメーションの視聴はこちら↓ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOpT1ddZ5xE

このアニメは多層構造の作品になっております。 表面的には、雨＝コロナウイルス、クラゲ＝家やマスク（雨から守ってくれるもの）。 少女＝外出している人（外出せざるを得ない人）もしくは経済＞コロナと思っている人という暗喩です。

医療や流通関係者はコロナにめげずに頑張っているが、リンゴ＝愛（この暗喩はフロイトからきています）はなかなか受け取ってもらえない。 少年はそんな外出者や、働いている人への理解を示しますが、物質的な支援は全て断られてしまいます。 それよりも杖＝支えとなるもの＝他者への貢献こそが少女に受け取ってもらえ、代わりにリンゴをもらいます。

少年はリンゴ＝愛を受け取ると、雨＝コロナは上がっています。 胸ポケットから飛んで行った写真はあらゆる動物に姿を変え、地球を覆う大きなクラゲに消えていきます。

愛は形を変え、他の動物にも伝わるだろう。 だって地球は大きなクラゲ＝家なのだから……。

という愛をうたった作品です。

しかし、それは表面的なメッセージです。 その真相は、現代版「ツァラトゥストラはかく語り」です。

コロナウイルスの蔓延によって、人々は失敗を恐れるようになった、と僕は思います。 外に出たら死ぬかもしれない、経済を止めたら死ぬかもしれない……。 だからこそみんな「正解」を知りたがる。 どうすれば「失敗」しないのか、他人に決めてほしいのです。

僕はこれを、民主主義の崩壊の前触れだと考えました。

民主主義は国民ひとり一人の思考力がなければ成立しません。 国民主体、人民が国を治めるからです。

でも思考力がなくなった人間たちは、どのように政治をするのでしょうか？

僕は一部の賢い人だけが政治を行い、残りの思考力のない人がその政治に従う「哲人政治」になると思います。

「哲人政治」はその昔、プラトンが試みた民主政治に替わる政治です。 哲学を学んだ本当に賢い者だけに権力を与え、私心の介入しない政治を目指したわけです。

しかし「哲人政治」は失敗に終わりました。 なぜなら人民の上に立つべき人を選別する方法が無かったためです。

でも現代ではどうでしょう？ もう既に、一部の「賢い人」に支配されつつある、と僕は思います。 すなわち、GAFA（Google、Apple、Facebook、Amazon）にです。

Amazonでレビューの高いものを買い、スマフォはiPhone、分からないことがあればGoogleに尋ねます。 思考力のない人はGAFAによって思考をコントロールされかねません。

さて、ニーチェは「ツァラトゥストラはかく語り」の中で同じような話を書いています。

当時、キリスト教の信仰者は輪廻転生を信じ、この人生で上手くいかなくても、来世で頑張ればいいという風潮があったそうです。 ニーチェはこの考え方を真っ向から批判し「永劫回帰」という言葉を産み出します。 すなわち、今日というこの日が永遠に繰り返されるとしても、今日を肯定できるような生き方をしなければならない。 つまり「今」を生きろということですね。

ニーチェはこの自己超克の考え方を持っている人間を「超人」、人間関係の軋轢におびえ、生活の保証、平安、快適、安楽という幸福を求める現代の一般大衆を「末人」と批判しました。

話をこのアニメーションに戻すと、本当は「雨＝将来への不安そのもの」です。 クラゲ＝正解を教えてくれるもの（GAFA）＝人間の頭の上に巣くうフワフワしたものです。 すなわち、クラゲの下で暮らす人を「末人」だとしているわけです。

ちななみに、なぜクラゲかというと、北村薫さんの「水に眠る」という短編集の中の「くらげ」という話からとっています。 「くらげ」という話はくらげ型の「個人エアコン」が発売され、人々はクラゲのヘルメットをかぶりながら生活するようになった……という話です。

物語冒頭、少年も街の人々もクラゲの下で利便性に甘んじ、無意識にGAFA政治を推し進めています。 顔がないのは、末人を人間ではないもの（家畜化された人類）だという批判をこめてです。

少女＝ツァラトゥストラ＝超人はクラゲを使わず、必死に人々を説得しますが、「末人」には理解されません。

少年（＝ツァラトゥストラの弟子になりうるもの）だけは少女の話を聞きますが、少女はクラゲの中からで出てきた物＝安定や安寧を受け入れません。 杖を渡すのは「ツァラトゥストラが弟子から取っ手が黄金の杖をもらい、道徳を説く」という一節より。

メガネ＝GoogleGlassesを外した少年は思考力を付け、リンゴ＝Apple社に食らいつきます。 ここでリンゴは聖書の「知恵の実」とのダブルミーニングになっており、知恵をつけた少年は「超人」への道を歩き出します。

知恵をつけると、もう雨＝不安は止んでいます。 はじめからそんなものは無かったのです。 それでも、まだクラゲの下で暮らす人たち……。

胸ポケットから飛び立つ写真の絵柄は「ラクダ→獅子→幼子」と変化しています。（敢えて分かりづらく描写しています。） これはニーチェが「ツァラトゥストラはかく語り」の中で語った、超人になるための精神変化の例えからです。

少年は超人を目指しますが、それでも、もう地球は大きなクラゲ＝GAFAに支配されてしまっています。 なぜなら、人間は"楽"を追い求めて進化してきたので、この流れを止めることは誰にもできないからです。

音楽的にも意匠を凝らしています。

まず、冒頭のソロチェロは「グレゴリオ聖歌」を演奏しています。 これはR.シュトラウスの「ツァラトゥストラはかく語り」からの引用です。

また、3拍子と4拍子を対比させています。 バロック以前は3拍子の音楽しかありませんでした。 なぜならキリスト教にとって3が完全な数字だったからです。（三位一体） つまり4拍子は不完全で、人間的な拍子だったわけです。

この曲の前半は4拍子で、末人を表現しています。 しかし白いフードの少女が登場するシーンでは3拍子になります。 当然、少女＝ツァラトゥストラの暗喩です。

少年がリンゴを食べてからは6拍子になります。 これは3拍子と4拍子の混ざったような拍子です。 少年は超人への道を歩み始めますが、まだまだ不完全で、3拍子になりきれずにいるのです。

この作品を制作した際はやや悲観的な終わり方でしたが、今は違います。 NFTが登場したからです。 NFTはGAFA政治を打ち破り、我々が真に主体的になりうる技術だと思っています。 だからこそ、この作品をNFTにすることに価値があると考えました。 onabeさんの"Girls & Flowers"には美しさだけでなく、凛々しさ、したたかさを感じます。 "Girls & Flowers"は、この曲に未来への希望と確かな意志を与えてくれると思います。

アニメになぞらえ、イラストも多層構造になっています。

1層目のテーマは楽曲を彩る「ジャケット」としての、"Girls & Flowers"×天休さんコラボレーション作品です。 アンニュイな曲調に合わせられるよう全体的にやや暗めのカラーで仕上げました。 色合いや女の子のイメージはアニメをリスペクトした上で、Girls & Flowersらしい作品になるようアレンジを加えさせていただきました。 初のコラボ作品なので、これまでの私の作品にはない「特別感」を出しながらも、Girls & Flowersのシンプルさを活かしたデザインにしています。

チューリップには「思いやり」という花言葉がある一方で、実は黄色のチューリップは「望みのない恋」という意味も併せ持っています。 はじめてこの楽曲を聴いた際、私の心に湧き出た感情は「切なさ」「深い愛情」「ノスタルジー」のようなものでした。 敢えて悲しい花言葉を持つ黄色いチューリップを持たせることで、切ない恋愛を連想させています。

2層目のテーマは私が想像する『くらげのまち』（※一般向け解釈のストーリー）の未来です。 女の子の背景に満開に咲くのは、実はリンゴの花です。 『くらげのまち』で少女からリンゴ＝愛を受け取った少年は、そのリンゴの種を大事に育てて、今度は彼がリンゴ＝愛を他の人に与えていくのではないかという希望を込めて、満開のリンゴの花を描きました。 リンゴの花には少し水滴が残っており、雨上がりであることを表現しています。 アニメの中ではフードを被っていた女の子も、このイラストでは被っていません。 花は凛と太陽に向かって咲き誇っており、背景の深いブルーが広い青空に見えるといいな…という想いも込めています。

3層目のテーマは「末人」へのメッセージとNFTの可能性に期待を込めてです。 2層目で晴々しく表現したリンゴの花ですが、リンゴの花が持つ花言葉は「選択」です。 英語ではpreferenceなので、より正確には自分の好きな方を選ぶ、というニュアンスだと思います。 天休さんが「ツァラトゥストラはかく語りき」に乗せて警鐘されていた、答えを求めて自分の頭では何も考えない・自分では何も選択できない人たち、に向けてのメッセージになっています。 また、ぱっとイラストを見ただけでは分からないようにしてニーチェが唱えた「永劫回帰」の文字をイラストの中に隠しました。 よく見ると花の中の黄色い○が、4つだけ漢字になっています。 これは野口英世の千円札に印刷された桜の中に偽装防止のため「ニホン」の文字が隠されているという技法のオマージュで、天休さんの楽曲がNFT化することにより、この楽曲が誰からも真似することも偽装することも出来ない、紛れもない「本物」の証明であることも実は意図しています。
