NYC is known for its vast cultural diversity and the distinct neighborhoods that people call home.
In this series I am highlighting a specific sub-culture of Italian Americans from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn.
Italian Americans value tradition, nostalgia or as they might say ~ keeping it old school.
Young men are taught the importance of being a gentleman, loyalty and to show respect in the community. This is a code to live by.
As an observer, this reminds me of growing up in South Brooklyn with an Italian family.
Playing stickball in the street, running through johnny pumps in the summer and mom yelling for dinner at 5:30. She had made sauce and life was a simpler time.
I believe this culture is still holding on to many of those memorable traditions of that time and it is something to be celebrated.
