The Bwa is a society native to Burkina Faso. They have a population of over 300,000 persons. The Bwa people live in a number of individualized communities. They have no central government but rely on their community standards. They are most known for their scarification and elaborate plank masks. The Bwa are a farming community who are found also in Mali.

The Bwa make two types of masks. The first type is made out of wild plant leaves, to represent nature and wilderness. The second type is made wood to represent multiple spirits who protect them. The masks all are representative of Dwo or (Do), which is the son of the creator spirit. The masks all are representative of Dwo or (Do), which is the son of the creator spirit. Dwo was sent to be the messenger to humans and the intermediary between humans and the spirits. He is also representative of plant and wildlife. The Bwa in the north dominantly wear the leaf masks, whereas the southern Bwa later adopted the wooden mask tradition from neighboring villages and then incorporated the new techniques into the telling of their tales.

Bwa masks are owned by entire families, but are mostly left in the care of the elders. The masks are accessible to everyone in the family, men and women. The rituals performed are mostly to communicate or tell stories of encounters with the spirits and the people. Each mask carries a different meaning. For example, a mask with a monkey face is a trickster. Others of more abstract animals, are various representations of Dwo/Do, who is charged with the purpose of safeguarding humanity. Birds are believed to be messengers, communicating from Bwa people to the supernatural world.

3D AFRICAN MASKS collection image

Most African masks that were taken from the continent are now in the homes of private collectors and museums. The descendants of these mask makers do not have the privilege of seeing what their ancestors carved. Even though the masks were aesthetically appealing, they were functional to the tribes that used them.

African masks represent ideas that are still relevant today. I am making the most rare and most expensive masks available to new collectors in 3D. 50% of Proceeds will be contributed in setting up an Innovation Hub, in Ghana. This Innovation Hub will be a place where young creatives who are the descendants of these mask makers will come to, to develop their ideas and bring them to fruition using technology. Creatives will receive training material to develop their talents and creative abilities.
