Una Ó Braonáin was very different. Cozunonian society was a pure consumer society. From birth, those around her were obsessed with purchasing the latest gadgets and consuming the latest content. But Una had no care for any of that. She was fiercely creative and wanted to make new things. She did not want to buy the same mass-produced "in" thing that everyone else had. Few understood her, and as she grew up and farther away from those around her, many began to fear her strange rebellion against their accepted social norms. She knew it was only a matter of time until that fear would turn to hate, and they would come for her.

Desperate times cause for creative measures, and so young Una searched far and wide for a way to calm their nervous misunderstandings of her. How could she let them understand and accept her unique bath in life as an inventor? The solution came to her one day while trying to ignore the latest episode of a soap opera playing on 14 different screens around the coffee shop she happened to be in. The show was an old one that was in its 83rd season. This had caused significant problems for the writers who tried to keep the storylines fresh. They had taken a gamble with this season when they introduced an array of fantasy characters. There was a wizard, a vampire, some pixies, a short fat elf, a tall thin dwarf, and the lead character, a young witch named Ila Ó Braon. The gamble paid off, and these characters became household names, especially that young witch.

Everyone loved watching her use her magic to create interesting solutions to the outlandish challenges the writers thought up for her each episode. Una took a gamble of her own and decided that she was also a witch. At first, her lack of confidence in her choice prevented anyone from believing, but after a few months practicing her lie, she almost came to believe it herself. She was not a strange outcast living on the edge of society doing things that no one understood. In fact, she was a magical creature who had unique and special powers, just like everyone's favorite TV personality, the witch Ila Ó Braon. It didn't matter that she had no magic powers, as her inventions were just as impressive as magic to the simpleton consumers who she was surrounded with. And once she believed it, everyone else came to believe it, connect her with the kind of thing they knew from TV, and come to love, not fear her.

Years went by, and she had gotten so deep into her character she did not think twice when she received a summons from Laruta by a master wizard. She immediately accepted the offer and headed off to the capital planet, excited to meet her fellow magic users.
