Now more machine than duck, Miri 9 had long lost touch with her original self. She had faint memories of another life when she was smaller, surrounded by ducks. Her memories of this life began in a laboratory filled with high-tech robotics and the ghosts of failed experiments. After her rebirth into this new life, the first thing she saw was the face of what she assumed was her creator and the joy that radiated from them when she didn’t die in the next moments.
Sadly though, while she didn’t die those following moments, her creator did.
She spent a moment in some kind of contemplation on the life now gone while wondering who she was herself and what she should do now. She didn’t have long to wonder as her system finished updating, and everything was made clear in a moment. It seemed that after decades of her creator’s life lost in their science, they came to a realization that the galaxy was on a path to destruction. The rest of their life was spent trying to find a solution to that destruction. Near the end, they realized that the answer was still far from their grasp and decided to create the one who would find that solution in a final effort.
She was that creation, and she had one directive, save the galaxy. That seemed simple to her, and she had no doubt she would succeed until she heard the most terrible of news. She was not alone in her mission. Someone they called the prophet had claimed that he was going to save the galaxy. She had no data on who he was or his chances of success, but that didn’t prove that he didn’t have a chance.
If he succeeded in saving the galaxy, her mission to save it would become impossible, as it was already saved. Her one directive would be impossible to fulfill, with failure being the only possibility.
Her first plan of action had gone disastrously. The assassin she’d sent to kill the prophet had succeeded in finding and meeting him, but for reasons unfathomable, had abandoned the mission and eloped with a pirate.
She would have to take a more direct approach.
