Three other speakers — recently retired Yankees captain Lou Gehrig, Yankees legend Babe Ruth and Yankees manager Joe McCarthy — were inducted into the New York Sports Hall of Fame between 1989 and 1991.

In this NFT, Gehrig appears with Farley. Also shown on the field are emcee Sid Mercer, New York Yankees and Washington Senators players and members of the Seventh Regiment Band. The Gehrig ceremonies were held before the second game of a Senators-Yankees doubleheader.

Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day was held to honor Gehrig, who was dying of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The rare and incurable disease became known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

At the time of the ceremony, Farley was simultaneously United States Postmaster General, chairman of the New York State Democratic Committee and chairman of the Democratic National Committee. In the latter role, he directed Franklin Roosevelt's successful presidential runs in 1932 and 1936.

A Greater New York native, Farley had previously served as chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission. He traces his political rise to baseball.

In 1940, Associated Press reported of Farley, "He might even be called the No. 1 fan, as there probably is no other national figure approaching his prominence who has been as loyal in attendance at games through the years... This interest, he explained, dates back to the days when he was a tall, lanky first baseman with the Haverstraw and Grassy Point, N.Y., semi-pro teams."

In his 1938 book "Behind the Ballots: A Personal History of a Politician," Farley writes of his transition from his playing days with the Grassy Point Alphas to the start of his political career as the elected town clerk of Stony Point, New York. Grassy Point lies within Stony Point.

"Playing first base for the Alphas baseball team had given me some reputation, and, with that as a foundation, I started out to become personally acquainted with as many voters as I could in the town," Farley remembered. "Baseball had given me a modest start. It was a good beginning, and it whetted my appetite for more."
