This 1-of-1 of uncut film of a speech by New York Yankees manager Joe McCarthy was delivered on Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939.

The first-ever NFT of this speech, this token is part of a collection that represents the first New York Sports Hall of Fame NFT offering.

The Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day Speech Collection features 1-of-1 tokens of remarks delivered at the Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day event, recorded by the same source. Three of the speakers — McCarthy, recently retired Yankees captain Lou Gehrig, Yankees legend Babe Ruth — were inducted into the New York Sports Hall of Fame between 1989 and 1991.

In this NFT, Gehrig appears with McCarthy and emcee Sid Mercer speaks. Also shown on the field are New York Yankees and Washington Senators players and members of the Seventh Regiment Band. The Gehrig ceremonies were held before the second game of a Senators-Yankees doubleheader.

At the ceremony, Gehrig delivered perhaps the most famous speech in sports history. A separate token in the collection features the longest single-source film recording of Gehrig's iconic address.

McCarthy was Gehrig's Yankees manager from 1931 to 1939.

When Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day was held, Gehrig was dying of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the rare and incurable disease that became known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Gehrig died less than two years later, 17 days shy of his 38th birthday. McCarthy was a pallbearer at Gehrig's funeral.

The New York Sports Hall of Fame has rights to this and thousands of other historical pieces of content in its treasured archives. The Hall plans to mint at least one NFT for each of its more than 300 members.
