One night, at the end of May, a huge and rare meteor shower was expected to take place. It never came to fruition, and faint Northern Lights appeared eventually. Overall, I was a bit disappointed, especially after hiking through a field of poison ivy (I learned this after the fact, and my guy friends wore shorts) and through windy sand dunes to get to a prime location.
When I got back to my car, around 3:30 am, I felt defeated. I thought I might as well take another photo of the beautiful, historic Point Betsie Lighthouse while I'm out. I've taken dozens before, it is a distinctive structure. I looked up at the sky and realized that the Milky Way was perfectly aligned with the beacon.
I ran out to the shore by myself, as my other friends were talking to people they just met, set up my Sony a7iii, and captured this shot just in time. I find some of my favorite shots are unplanned, and happy accidents.
This image is available as an exclusive Air Drop to anyone who has collected both my "Under the Milky Way" and "Shot Through the Arch" Special Editions.
