A hilly region in the Northwest, the Atakora, constitutes the water reservoir for Benin and Niger Republics and offers the opportunity to see gorgeous landscapes, billowing waterfalls and visit the best national park in the country. Welcome to the Pendjari National Park !

Located 28 miles (45 kms) north of the town of Natitingou, its varied animal life includes elephants, leopards, lions, antelope, birds, monkeys, wild pigs, crocodiles, and buffalo. There are many species of snakes, including pythons and puff adders.

By nightfall, we were back at the Pendjari Lodge. What a day! Being within reach of so many animals that you usually only see in books or at the zoo was breathtaking.

No electricity, no internet connection… The night was so dark and what light we had, was only coming from the shallow glimmer of oil lamps and moonshine.

It was a marvelous night, the sort of night one only experiences when one is young. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the tents were made of sheets of fabric or other materials draped over frames of poles that were charmed to be larger inside than they looked from the outside, somewhat resembling small homes with beds, chairs, tables, … This is exactly what the tent accommodation looked like !

That night I fell asleep, lulled by the music of the wilderness around us.
