There are five natural regions in Benin. The southern coastal region is low, flat, sandy and characterized by lagoons and marshes formed by the three main rivers of the country.

La Route des Pêches (The Fishers’ Road)… One of my favorite places in Cotonou. It stretches along the coastline from Cotonou to Ouidah, with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and The Adounko Lagoon on the other side.

For centuries, fishermen have launched their pirogues, where the fish used to be so plentiful a man could dip his hand into the grey-green ocean and pull out a fish as big as his thigh. But in an Atlantic Ocean decimated by overfishing and climate change, the fish are harder and harder to find.

From afar, the fishing villages looked like a big anthill, pulsing with hundreds of people. Everything, from the view of fishermen in their boats, the hustle and bustle of the fresh seafood markets, the pulling of wet nets from the ocean, was bursting with life and freedom.
