Photography has given me the opportunity to go on many journeys across the globe and experience life from many different perspectives.

This image was captured in Rwanda (2016) on one sunny afternoon as I was leaving the Akagera National Park. While the car I was in was driving away, I spotted some action about 300 meters away. I quickly asked the driver to stop the car, went out of it and started walking toward the cowherds. After I got closer, I sat on limestone rock, waved at them and watched them in action with the camera in my hands. As I sat there, I remember feeling the heat not only on my skin but also in the air I breathed. Even though it was almost the end of the day, it didn’t make the heat any less piercing. There was one point when it became quite unbearable, I almost gave up. But then I took a closer look and watched how despite the heat, there was not a single grumbling face on that field. Quite the contrary, all I saw were smiling faces, with a tad of curiosity. I watched how the shepherd was patiently tending to their herds under the scorching hot weather, making sure that each cow drank plenty of water to stay hydrated. I watched how they looked equally curious about what I was doing. I could see the inaudible dialogue from where I was sitting. The laughter they shared. The giggles. The ability to find joy in what I could only imagine as challenging work. That was the moment I knew I had to get my camera out and captured it.

This photograph is one of my favorite pieces of all time. It always brought me back to that exact moment. That one sunny afternoon, sitting on that rock, watching the cowherds and the joy on the shepherd’s face, albeit the heat.
