まだ若い頃の部長には、「上にいきたい」という強い出世欲がありました。権力が欲しいわけではなく、自分の家族を幸せにするためには、そうするより他に生きる道が無かったというのが正直なところかもしれません。部長になった今は、これ以上の出世は望んでいませんが、時々考えることがあるそうです。「もし、自分に権力を欲する気持ちがあったなら、どうなっていただろう？」と。

その日の夜は、いつもより少しだけ風が冷たく、野良猫が走り回り、雑木林の奥からは犬の遠吠えがよく聞こえてきました。街がすっかり寝静まった頃、寂れた映画館の一室では、ドーナツを身につけた黒い制服の「何者か」が、カラカラと回る映写機が映し出す古いフィルムを眺めています。彼にも、誰かがつけてくれた名前があったはずなのですが、「総帥」という名前で呼ばれていました。
