The Last Sunrise

#1 out of 9

About the Artist/Photographer: Ben, an adventure photographer from the Canadian Rockies who travels with his dog Rosa.

This one is special, the earliest piece in this collection. It’s the only piece shot on the old kit lens that made it into this collection. But, how could I tell a story of my growth without this shot? The night before, I was up until midnight shooting the sunset on a mountain, and awake again at 3am to climb another mountain for sunrise. As I reached the summit of ‘The Devils Thumb ’, a mountain overlooking the infamous Lake Louise. I could smell smoke. All I could smell were the wild fires from B.C. blowing in. The day before had been clear. The sunset, literally hours before was boring, no colour, no smoke, no nothing. But this was dense. I was worried it would be so thick I wouldn’t get a view when the sun rose. However, slowly the horizon began to reveal the most vibrant, long lasting sunrise of my life. It was as if the sky was reflecting the fire, and you could watch plumes of smoke drifting across the sky. I filled my memory card, but this photo just fills me with joy. Look at that girl staring at me and me at her. A perfect moment. We descended, only to find the valley filling with smoke. You could barely see the hotel from the other side of the lake, it was so thick. Then the smoke settled in for what felt like an eternity. No sunrises for over a month. And that is why this is called “The Last Sunrise”.

This collection is my first, and as I am writing this, I don’t really know what to say or how to explain it. How do I, Ben, just some guy at a computer explain to you the love and passion I have for photography? How do I tell someone, whom I don’t know, what these shots mean to me? How hiking 20kms through the deep snow in -20 degrees Celsius just to take one picture, will have me not just smiling, but beaming with joy so hard my face aches when I get home? How do I describe the pleasure I get when I see the look on someone’s face when I show them my work? Where do I start? Probably, from the beginning? Welcome to my Genesis, my story, my Growth.
