On April 18, 2017 I was bored at work, I checked my Facebook messages and suddenly my day got much more interesting.
It was a message from Eric, an aurora researcher from the University of Calgary and he had just given a talk on the aurora in Banff hosted by the European Space Agency. He had used my image in his presentation and now ESA was presenting his findings on their site and they chose my STEVE image as the one they wanted to feature.

It was September 2016 and I was only a couple years into my photography journey and went out shooting late in the afternoon. I knew there were aurora forecast and decided to check out an area west of the city called 6 mile hill. I bumbled around like one does upon going to a new spot looking for nice compositions.
One of the little lakes in this area is called Morgan Lake, a manmade lake which actually covers the old trans-Canada highway. I had set up here as the sun began to set in anticipation of the possibility of aurora. I shot the sunset and then I sat for hours as it got dark. I waited and waited and waited some more but after several hours there was only a faint green glow over the horizon. At about midnight I decided I was going to start making my way back to the city.
I had made my way almost back to the highway when I saw a little burst of colour so I stopped and set up to take a shot when I noticed this weird white coloured arc off two the west. I captured this image.
