The Villain
...is an attempt to objectively reflect on one’s persona. It applies as a reference the following quote; “Everyone is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody.” ― Mark Twain
One's perception of themselves, especially when it comes to their shortcomings is sometimes viewed with a narrow lens. As a result, the figurative images we take of ourselves are either black or white but never gray. These images form the personal narratives we create about ourselves, and inspire the stories of our experiences. These stories will often directly or indirectly answer questions like; 'who was justified?' or 'who was deserving and/or undeserving?' and most importantly, who was the villain?
And so, this piece aims to inspire candid contemplations of oneself, and prompts the question, The villains in your stories, are they truly the villain? Or do they simply have to be? Because if they are not… then maybe… you are?
Please view the pieces in the following order: the villain, the confrontation, the negative space, the light. This collection depicts my struggle with imposter syndrome not just as an artist but also as a person. It occurs as follows:
We begin with episodes of half-truths and self delusion. Reality becomes obscured by intrusive thoughts and we become lost in them. The mind sinks, it’s depth has been expanded and is now impenetrable. In this prison, a monster is released. Why are they always so strong? Simple. It’s because we make them that way. In what I believe to be uncontrollable small mindedness, we fuel this monster rather than ourselves, foolishly. And so, it overwhelms us. The mind sinks again. Disoriented, we fall in deeper and deeper. Finally, as we are engulfed in the depth of darkness, a lapse in time occurs where we stop flailing and become still. Outward stillness becomes inward. It brings clarity. It’s still dark, but but there seems to be a glimmer of light.
