As a child, I was told to never play with these berries because they are toxic. But I knew that touching them was not, because I did it all the time–whipping up berry stews for my dolls in the woods. Though I did at least listen to the advice to the extent that I never ate them (which is fortunate as they are poisonous to eat)!

In a rather Lady Macbeth-like twist, my hands were often dyed red by their juice. Seeing this particularly ripe bunch by a mangled leaf in Georgia, brought me back to the constraints of childhood that can be easy to overlook as an adult.
