"Dreams to Nightmares"

As the thunderstorm was approaching NYC, we knew we would be cutting it close with this mission. We quickly made our way to top the 800ft tall building and ascended the 300ft spire. Although everything appeared to be working seamlessly at this point, we had no idea that the journey had only just begun. On the descent from the 300ft antenna I was blasted by a wall of the heaviest rain I've ever experienced and wind gusts strong enough to blow the mask off my face. I frantically packed up my gear and began rushing down each rung of the radioactive spire.

Upon making it safely back down to the rooftop, we realized we were trapped. We were locked on a rooftop hundreds of feet above the city in the midst of one of the most severe storms I’ve seen. With nothing to do and nowhere to go, the anxiety began setting in. Unknowing of what would come next, all I could do was enjoy the present moment. It was just past sunset, the lights of Times Square were beginning to shine, and as the heavy rain fell it created a beautiful mist beneath us. With Drift’s camera not working from the spire’s radiation, we decided to share mine during the brief breaks in the rain. We sat side by side, where I took this image, joking and laughing to break the tension of the situation we found ourselves in. With our backs against the walls and a minimal margin of error I couldn’t have imagined living these moments with anyone except for those that I trust.

When I started exploring the off-limits side of the New York, I never expected I would meet a community of people with the same interest. As time went by and I fell deeper into New York City’s culture for urban exploration I was able to explore with many great people. The truth is, many of these missions aren’t alone. Many require teamwork and coordination. When you’re faced with challenges like navigating these complex places, having your back against the wall where just one sound can get you in trouble, and faced with life or death moments, you come out of those missions with your crew turned family.

In areas so populated, it’s rare to find places to be alone with the city. Rather than being consumed by the city you become like a part of it. “Alone Together” is a series that shows exploring the heights of the city with the family I’ve met. This series shows the moments we’ve pulled off the “impossible”. The moments that landed us in jail. The moments that brought us together.
