"Peninsula Pelican II" is the second in a series of 6 Pelicans, originally painted during the first Covid Lockdown. These oil paintings kept me sane at the beginning of the pandemic. Just as everything around me was falling apart, my purpose was coming together. During the mating season, the California Brown Pelican lights up in color. I see them up close while surfing and I want to pass on the serenity, peace and connection that I feel, when they cruise by, gliding over the waves, usually hunting. They truly are prehistoric Pterodactyls These Peninsula Pelicans are flying in their natural habitat; ironically with oil tanker and oil derrick islands, the background. The three local oil derricks off the Long Beach, CA coast, are 'disguised' as islands, named after the three US astronauts who died in the Apollo I mission: Gus Grissom, Edward H. White II, Roger B. Chaffee.
The Peninsula Pelicans are about connection; w/Nature, w/ Myself, w/ the Universe, w/ God. I tried to convey my experience in the water. A sense that everything is right in the world. When in the ocean surfing, I am fully present there, nothing else matters, nothing else exists. During the mating season, the California Brown Pelican lights up in color.
