Morocco: Land of Colors
Piece #9 of 20
"University Tiles"
Edition of 1
Al-Karaouine University in Fes is the oldest continually operating university in the world. Founded in 859 CE, the school was originally established as a religious school, or madrasa, designed to train religious scholars. Today, modern subjects are taught alongside religious ones, and students can earn both high school and college degrees. However, all attendees must memorize the entire Quran to gain admittance.
Morocco: Land of Colors is a limited set of 20 photographs taken during my time spent living in the country in 2015.
Morocco is unique. It spans a multitude of geographies and terrains from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Atlas Mountains in the East to the Sahara Desert in the south.
It's geographical diversity is mirrored in its people. With a rich blend of culture from Arab, Spanish, French, African and Berber influences, each city and region in the country takes on a life of its own. Every Moroccan city even has its own colorful name: see The Blue Pearl of Chefchaouen and the Red City of Marrakech.
The title of this collection references the country's nickname: the land of colors. With these photos I aim to showcase the richness of Morocco's culture, people, and color as an ode to what made my time living there so spectacular.
