As part of my new Self Made collection, I strive to embody the infamous quote by Cher “Mom, I am a rich man” in which we as women understand that a man is not a necessity, but a luxury. Though with the many things that a man can “provide”, a woman can very well obtain for themselves and in result, achieve a sense of self-fulfillment and self worth. As a woman of color, I know how having the mindset of living a "soft life" and having such luxuries can be overshadowed by what society believes is appropriate. We are often told to find yourself a rich man to marry and rely on your partner to fulfill your wants and wishes, while also learning how to be independent enough to show that you are a desirable partner. My work highlights how important it is to put yourself first. To believe that we are capable of obtaining everything that a man can "provide" in which grants us with the sense of self-fulfillment and self-worth. With that, we are aware of what we bring to the table and that we are in fact the prize to be won. We are simply self-made.
