Mangkukulam are Filipino witches. They practice “Kulam” - a form of native folk magic. Mangkukulam have the power to cast curses and summon plagues. They obtain strands of their victim’s hair (or a piece of their personal belongings) and attach it to a doll to manipulate and inflict harm on their targets. The craft of “Kulam” uses earth, fire, herbs, and blood for its rituals. It puts an emphasis on the mastery of Magica Baja (low magic) and the innate power of the self.
