“Chou Vert”

I happen to work in a kitchen. Have been in kitchens on and off four 4 years. Needless to say I picked up many recipes, and most importantly, art supplies!? Seems being an international student with a 20 hour work limit forces you to reevaluate artist materials. 60$ stretched canvases? HA. Get the fuck out of here. 36$ 60ml tube of Cadmium Red series E acrylic paint alone? Kiss my fucking ass. So I looked to everything else. Wall teared down? People painted on wood before canvas! A kids pool left by an MFA student?Perfect for wall mounted sculpture! Empty Fishboy sauce bottle? Man that fucking baby on bottle is a hilarious reference! Chou Vert (green cabbage) stickers left inside the produce box? Fuck it, I’m already knees deep in Kim-chi, and stickers ain’t cheap.

This work aims to represent the mental process of making Kim-chi. All you can think about is how horrible the smell is, how horrible you’re going to smell, possibly breaking your back lifting heavy cambros, and when is the last time I am going to see those fucking CHOU VERT boxes today.

The end result is beautiful. Like most artworks however, the process is ass.

This work employs heavy elements of found art, specifically within culinary themes and ideas. I often think that cooks and artists are the same. I can’t tell you how many artists I have met working in kitchens, and how the kitchen leaves its mark on their work.
