This photo was taken outside of a hostel I stayed in while spending a Winter Season in Japan. Asahi -Dake is the highest point on Hokkaido coming in at 2291 meters, which coming from Canada isn't all to high. We were there to ski at the resort which features one big Jackson hole like tram that takes you to about 1600m every 30 minutes or so. The quality of the snow there was INCREDIBLE, Japan has some of the best powder skiing on Earth. Before hitting the slopes I got up for sunrise to photograph some of the surrounding landscapes. Just outside of our hostel which had its own onsen, Japanese for hot spring, was this tree. The steam coming from the spring with the morning light created these beautiful rays peaking through the branches. I love this lighting effect and I don't get to see it occur very often, so I was thrilled with the outcome. This photograph reminds me to look for the light in every day. Even when times are dark, there is always a ray of light at the end of the tunnel.

Troposphere collection image

Troposphere is a culmination of some of my favorite work to date. I have spent 30 marvelous years on this planet. The troposphere is the lowest layer of the atmosphere. It provides us with life every single day and it's where all our weather phenomenon happen. As a landscape photographer this affects my work in a massive way. Low pressure systems bring in rain and clouds for those moody shots. High pressure systems bring clear skies, perfect for capturing the stars, northern lights and milky way. Clouds give us amazing contrasts, sunsets and sunrises. A big component of what separates good from great landscape photography is the weather and the conditions it brings. That is why I am forever grateful to be living here, during this era. Capturing the beauty the troposphere has to offer and sharing it with everyone is what inspires me every single day.
