Some nights I stare at the Moon and wonder - why has Earth never been contacted by another form of life from the depths of the cosmos? The possibility that such a vast Universe contains no other beings capable of moving, communicating, thinking is utterly unbelievable. Maybe our Solar system is devoid of life beyond Earth but while we are still unable to travel into deep space, I have to wonder - why have inhabitants of other worlds not reached out to us?
The more I think about it, the more absurd it all seems. Us, humans, sit somewhere in the corner of infinite space. I ask myself and you at the same time - would you travel to the other side of the World to meet an ant colony? The answer seems clear.
We have created so much, yet we still have not advanced that far. Foolishly blinded by the belief of our own importance, we try to construct meaning, which is nothing more than a hallucination generated by our own brains. It’s eerie to think that our lives are meaningless and so brief when compared to the endless cosmos. Striving to reach our goals, chasing the vain norms of society, living altogether seems… pointless.
As I stare at the Moon, I feel the dread that runs through my veins turning into something comforting. Something I cannot comprehend - meaningless, yet purposeful. Sometimes, after having stared at the boundless night sky for a bit too long, you could feel the urge to leave this mortal coil. Other times you might just want to stay and enjoy the moment.
“Be clearly aware of the stars and infinity on high. Then life seems almost enchanted after all.“ (Vincent Van Gogh)
