The Southern Alps runs 500km north to south with the tallest peak, Aoraki / Mount Cook being the highest point in New Zealand at 3,724 metres (12,218 ft). The mountain region is made up of huge hanging glaciers, deep glacial valleys, and turquoise blue lakes.
