The attractive setting, the fascinating history, the old church and the neoclassical hotel make this park one of the most popular attractions in Mérida. Relax in the tranquil atmosphere of Parque Hidalgo. This charming little park is located in the center of Merida and is surrounded by shops, historic buildings, restaurants, and cafes.

Although the origin of this area dates back to the beginning of the 17th century, the place became a square and then a park until the 19th century. During its great history, this site has been used as a training ground for soldiers and as a stage for Good Friday commemorations, where the inhabitants of the region and visitors used to see the representations of the death of Christ.

Sit on a bench and enjoy the beauty around you. The most prominent element of the park is a statue of Manuel Cepeda Peraza, an important military figure from the 19th century who became the governor of Yucatan. In fact, some inhabitants of the region refer to this place as Parque General Cepeda Peraza. Behind the statue is the Grand Hotel, which was built in 1901. This elegant property has been restored to its original neoclassical appearance.

Another important building that adjoins the park is the Church of the Third Order, also known as the Church of Jesus. The Jesuits built this structure in the 17th century. Tour the interior to see the frescoes, chandeliers, and stained-glass dome. Admission is free.

You can usually see various musicians, street vendors, artists and craftsmen in the park. See the handmade crafts and unique works of art. Visit the nearby shops and then enjoy a drink or a good meal on the terrace of a restaurant or cafe. Watch the people walking around from your table.

Parque Hidalgo is a bit north of Plaza Grande, which is the main square in downtown Mérida. You can also get here by taxi, public transport or car. If you prefer, you can enjoy a ride in a horse carriage. In addition to passing through the park, these tours include the main attractions in the area.
