THE FALLING ANGEL – THE JOURNEY OF LIFE. Chapter 20. Ascending

Originally when I painted "The Marked One" (the painting of the falling angel that became the source and the inspiration behind these animations) back in 1988, I did it in such a way as to build multiple meanings into one painting. On the surface, it is a very minimalistic composition of an abyss and an angel falling into it. It is very tragic. But turn it to the side and suddenly it is a different image with an angel flying in a very narrow space. Turn it again and he is ascending. Turn it once more and now he is flying upside down in that narrow expanse of light. All of these images speak to our life experiences.

When we see the angel falling, it reminds us of our tragedies and shortcomings. In his novel "The Trial," Franz Kafka reminds us that we live in an age when we all feel guilty for something and none of us recognises that we are sinful. So when we see this angel, the image touches something deep inside us reminding us of our brokenness. But when you turn the painting it speaks to our moments of striving and overcoming, when we push through and persevere.

We gaze upon the angel rising once we turn the painting, and we are at once reminded of those moments of ecstasy when we were on top of the world and nothing seemed to touch us. But with the turn of the canvas, the memories of when everything in our life seemed upside down flood our consciousness. It appears that we are stumbling through life in such moments. We are just striving to survive in those seasons of life.

This plethora of emotions was built into a simple, reasonably small canvas originally, but now I am able to extract them and express through 25 #NFTs. The Marked One served as the original source for these animations, but I also took the red crosses from "The Red Marks" and created a brand-new digital painting from these two. All of this is set to the music of Mozart’s “Requiem,” for it is at that moment of death, of sorrow and weeping, that we see life so much more clearly. SDG

The Living Art collection image

Paintings are living and breathing. They are born, grow up and leave their home finding a new one with a collector. They are like children. I never betrayed them and they repaid me in kind.

This is an open collection of animation NFTs that allows the audience to take a small peak into the way I see my paintings, to hear the music that I hear and to experience the movement that I see in my work when I breathe life into my creations.
