Peng Shuai is a Chinese tennis champion, ranked world No. 1 doubles player by the WTA in 2014.
On November 2, 2021, Peng posted on Weibo accusing Zhang Gaoli, a retired Vice Premier of China, of sexually assaulting her three years earlier. Her post was censored 20 mins later, along with her name and even the Chinese word for tennis. She then disappeared from public view for two weeks.
The incident elicited international concern over her safety, the hashtag #WhereIsPengShuai went viral outside of China, and received support from tennis stars such as Naomi Osaka, and Serena Williams. Her reappearance had been believed to been staged in response to foreign inquiries. The WTA concerned about her ability to communicate freely, and hence suspended all events in China.
米兔 (rice rabbit) is pronounced mi-tu, a term used to circumvent Chinese censorship on sexual assault stories with the hashtag #MeToo. Chinese feminists adopted the homonym "rice rabbit" instead.
This NFT collection brings prominent but censored Chinese #MeToo stories onto blockchain. The artworks feature #MeToo survivors as rabbit characters, in Chinese traditional ink on rice paper painting style.
