I'm from an island in the middle of the Atlantic ocean called São Miguel. In my land, the fruit Cherimoya is also known locally as ‘Black Heart’ (Coração Negro). It is this name that inspired me to create this piece. The fruit in the model’s hands represents her holding a heart. Her own hands almost make the shape of a heart too. I wanted this piece to talk about emotions and fragility. Holding a heart in one’s hands, even if our own, is something that requires care and kindness, or else it might turn sour/black, just like a fruit. May we treat others and ourselves with kindness, so we can grow and become fruitful in our minds, our creations and in our lives.
