Egungun Amuludun as the name entails, is an ancient cheerful masquerade that comes out during celebration to incite its worshippers. In the olden days, Egungun Amuludun is known for its popularity because of its cheerful nature and his ability to transform into creatures. He is a very good dancer who is loved by many in his town. On the day when he is to appear, the crowd goes ahead of him waiting for the creature he will appear as. His drummers seated in harmony start beating their drums furiously to praise and arouse him, he then comes out singing and replying to their beat. While coming out he appears in different forms, like a dog, a statue and finally like a human being. While his performance is on, his satisfied audience spends lavishly on him while singing, dancing and staring in amazement at his performance. Egungun Amuludun’s village and neighbouring villages are always happy whenever Egungun Amulundun comes out, this is because as soon as he is done with his performance in his village, he moves on to surrounding villages far and near bringing joy to everyone. He does go around villages for 6 months before returning to his hometown and when he is finally home, he begins preparation for new performances by learning new songs, drum beats, appraisals and dance steps. Egungun Amuludun is not only loved for his performance but is also loved for his charitable spirit. Whenever he returns from his performance, he shares his gifts, money and food items with the poor and needy in the land. Amuludun as his name describes indeed brings joy to his people and his presence is always awaited by many.

Egungun is popularly known to be a Yoruba masquerade and a collective force of past ancestors. They are known to have their identities hidden behind a mask because they are incarnated beings. The Egungun, now fondly called Eegun by the modern Yoruba and foreign entities who can’t get the pronunciation right, is a highly honoured god in Yoruba land. Egungun/Eegun is fondly referred to as an Orisa in Yoruba Land, this is because it is believed that they are a manifestation of ancestral spirits who come visiting periodically for remembrance, visitation and celebration. It is believed that there are varieties of Egungun for different towns, cultures, traditions and seasons- each culture in the Yoruba land have their orisa Egungun and diverse means of worshipping them. In this collection , I will be sharing with you some Egungun in Yoruba land from the town of Olude, Atan, and Ipaja, Nigeria.
