Abraham Lake and the yellow dress

I was co-leading a photography tour in the Canadian Rockies Jan 2019 when we took our group to the famous bubble lake. This lake is well known for the methane ice bubbles that get trapped under the ice. It makes a beautiful foreground and is a playground for photographers.

I knew I had to have one self-portrait at this lake before the winter season was over. When the group was all settled into their shooting locations, I snuck away to set up near this unique formation of bubbles. I had around 5 mins to take this shot and had to change right there on the ice into my dress. I usually keep my snow-pants on underneath the dress when it is this chilly and have to do a little photoshop clean up work to hide any pieces that stick out from under the dress.

I quickly took the image and then returned back to the group to carry on shooting with them.

My images typically involve a long exposure so I do have to take two images and blend them together. I take one shot of the scene without me in it and this is the long exposure part. Then I take a second shot with me in the scene and blend them together in photoshop.
A tripod is a must for these shots and I have an app on my phone that connects to my camera, which acts as a live view screen and remote to take the picture. This is very handy as I can see myself in the process and make sure I nail down the posing.

SOLD OUT

I come from a family of abuse. My dad. Physical, verbal and emotional. I watched in horror and anger how he treated my mom, who is truly a special lady. I remember when I was little, I would shut off my mind and escape in my dreams. This is called disconnecting. I often dreamt of a different family or I would have nightmares of something happening to my mom. There was this moment in grade 5 when my dad was so angry at me for something, he had me pinned on the ground and I can still picture his face shouting at me to this day.

This all came out in my adult life and I made many poor decisions in my late 20s. My mental health declined and I had no choice but to face these dragons. Forgiveness has happened with my family and I am in an AMAZING place now in my 30's.

Even though I’m a grown woman, these images represent that little girl who had many dreams of escaping to beautiful places in a dress.

Thank you for viewing my heart & passion.
