In the final minutes before it fell below the horizon, the sun used its last light to illuminate a cloud pattern shaped like open-winged eagle soaring high in the sky.

An Observation of Sunsets and Moon Rises During Solar Cycle 25 collection image

Modern society has lost its connection to the organic cycles of the natural world that surrounds all of us. In an effort to jolt humanity awake from its robotic slumber, nature has started to put on an increasingly spectacular show with the help of its trusted companions, the sun and the moon.

This series of photos is an observation on the influence of solar activity on sunsets and moon rises as observed from earth. Less than 2 years in, Solar Cycle 25 is trending to exceed all forecasts in terms of number of sunspots and solar flare activity. Many of the photos in this series were captured during solar storms, which occur when solar flares or coronal mass ejections emit bursts of electrically charged energy towards earth. Although correlation is not causation, it is my opinion that these solar storm events generate optically vivid skies on earth.

Photos were taken in the upper Midwest and Gulf Coast states including Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Florida.
