La Maddalena collection image

La Maddalena is a collection of self-portraits shot in one afternoon in the summer of 2018 in La Maddalena, a commune located in northern Sardinia, Italy. The photographs capture my conversation with Mother Nature as she takes me on a journey of healing and self-discovery.

Some places have a certain kind of magic. They pull you towards them and embrace you in their beauty. I position myself as a mere dot in the vastness of the space, insignificant but ever-present. It is a reminder that however alone I feel in this world, I am connected to something much bigger than myself.

In my self-portrait work, I turn the camera on myself and use my own body as an act of resistance. Self-portraiture is my tool to challenge traditional ideas around the Arab female identity. These photographs are my most vulnerable to date and serve as a record of transformation; shedding my old skin and re-emerging anew.

Shot on an iPhone 7.
